The Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS)

The Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS) unites salaried doctors and dentists.
It is our professional association and union.

ASMS works for better health care in New Zealand, and for recognition of the expertise and professional voice of our members.  ASMS assures the right of our members to speak on
professional issues, without interference from employers.  ASMS lobbies actively for a high quality public health system.

Membership is open to any doctor or dentist who is an employee (the main exceptions are resident medical officers and doctors employed by universities).

ASMS:  A Professional Association

As a professional association we promote:

  • right of equal access for all New Zealanders to high quality health services
  • professional interests of salaried doctors and dentists
  • policies sought in legislation and government by salaried doctors and dentists

ASMS:  A Professional Union

As a union of professionals we:

  • provide advice to salaried doctors and dentists who receive a job offer from a New Zealand employer
  • negotiate effective and enforceable collective employment agreements with employers.  This includes the collective agreement (MECA) covering employment of senior medical and dental staff in district health boards which ensures minimum terms and conditions for more than 2,700 doctors and dentists, over 90% of this workforce.
  • advise and represent members when necessary
  • support workplace empowerment and clinical leadership

Senior Medical and Dental Vacancies in New Zealand

On this website we advertise permanent and locum job vacancies in a wide range of medical and dental specialties for doctors and dentists seeking work in New Zealand.  Many district health board websites also advertise hospital and health vacancies for senior doctor and dentist posts.  New Zealand medical vacancies are also listed in the British Medical Journal and BMJCareers.com.

More information for medical job seekers is available in our Employment in New Zealand section.  Before practising medicine in New Zealand you must be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) or the Dental Council of New Zealand.
