Our membership is open to any salaried specialist or senior medical or dental officer employed in New Zealand’s public hospital system. About 90 per cent of all specialists and other senior medical & dental officers working in the public hospital system are members of ASMS.
Membership is also open to other senior medical officers who work in Hospices, private specialist practices, Union Health Services, rural-based Community Health Trusts and the Family Planning Association. About 5 per cent of our members work for such groups and most of these members are general practitioners.
Separate organisations exist to represent the employment interests of house surgeons, registrars and medical/dental practitioners employed in the University Medical Schools and government departments. They are not eligible for membership of the ASMS.
We welcome enquiries from medical or dental practitioners who think they may be eligible for membership. In particular we welcome enquiries from medical & dental practitioners who are considering appointments or who have been offered positions in New Zealand.
For the year 1 April 2010 - 31 March 2011 our subscription is $720.00 per annum. This may be paid by fortnightly salary deductions of $27.69.
Reduced subscriptions are available for members who earn less than $72,000 per annum. In these cases the subscription is calculated at 1 per cent of the salaried earnings, the minimum being $100.00.
