ASMS members recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

The health sector has had a strong showing in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.  ASMS would like to congratulate four members whose contributions have been recognised.

Dr George Ngaei, a Southland surgeon, has become a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for his services to health and the Pacific community.

Professor Alec Ekeroma, an obstetrician and gynaecologist who worked at Middlemore Hospital, has been appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for his services to health and the Pacific community.

Dr Garry Forgeson, a medical oncologist at Palmerston North Hospital, has been made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for his services to oncology.

Dr Janet Turnbull, a Wellington consultant geriatrician, has become a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for her services to health

Several others in the health sector also received honours.

Jackie Edmond, the Chief Executive of Family Planning, has become a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) her services to sexual and reproductive health.

Professor Robert Elliott, a former University of Auckland professor of paediatrics who made a medical breakthrough in cystic fibrosis treatment, has become a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (KNZM) for his services to medical research.

Dr Karen Poutasi, a former Director of Health and former ASMS member, has become a Dame Companion for her contribution to education following her time as Chief Executive of NZQA.  She is currently Commissioner of Waikato DHB and became a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her contribution to health administration in 2006.

Dr Jane Harding, a neo-natal expert at the University of Auckland’s Liggins Institute, has been appointed a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to neonatology and perinatology.

Professor John Nacey, a Professor of Urology at Otago University’s Wellington School of Medicine, has been appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for his services to health and education.
