Proposed Waikato medical school decision is on ice
Waikato’s medical school plans remain stalled at a government decision on the proposal.
At a Waikato District Health Board meeting on Wednesday, interim chief executive Derek Wright confirmed that there is no further update on the third medical school other than an indication that the Government will not make any decision on this until later in 2019.
There is a joint bid by Waikato University and the Waikato District Health Board to create the country’s third medical school. A decision on its progress has been put on hold after the Labour Government took over.
Wright said that they would continue to lobby as there are discussions going on in the background, but they had talked to the Minister and his indication is that the government won’t make a decision until late next year.
