Leaky pipes threaten Wellington hospital operating theatres
Leaky pipes at Wellington Hospital could take out a theatre or other crucial area as the “extreme risk” issue rolls towards its fourth year.
Capital & Coast district Health Board has been struggling with leaking copper pipes for years but a just-released risk assessment shows that a long term solution appears to be a pipedream – even as it pursues legal avenues for an estimated $19 million in repairs.
The leaking pipes have been categorised as an “extreme risk” to clinical work, business continuity, and health and safety since at least 2016. meaning urgent action was required, though the health board has played down the risk. The building, and 74km of pipework, was just eight years old when the problem first became apparent.
