Trust set up to enable further clinical research in Taranaki into childhood obesity

8 May 2019 Stuff - Helen Harvey

An award winning doctor has set up a trust to enable clinical research on childhood obesity to take place in Taranaki.

Dr Yvonne Anderson, a paediatrician at Taranaki Base Hospital, has won a best doctoral thesis award for her work with Whānau Pakari, a groundbreaking Taranaki-based programme looking at childhood obesity.

Of the 392 PhDs awarded in 2018 from The University of Auckland, only five received the award.

Research shows Whānau Pakari has brought about improvements in cardiovascular fitness and quality of life, and that participants who attended more than 70 percent of sessions had significant reductions in BMI adjusted for age over time.

Her thesis generated 11 papers in scientific journals, with two more in the pipeline. These papershave advanced the understanding of serious weight-related health issues experienced by children and teens affected by obesity, as well as their eating, activity, screen-time habits and psychological wellbeing.
