Attacks on children’s hospitals must end

20 November 2019 World Medical Association

The increasing trend for children’s hospitals to be attacked by terrorists and armed forces has been denounced by the World Medical Association to mark tomorrow’s 30th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

WMA President Dr. Miguel Jorge said that recent reports of indiscriminate attacks in Bolivia, Yemen and Syria had highlighted a global outrage that needed to be condemned by the world.

‘This week’s anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child provides us with an opportunity to speak out about these appalling violations of international law.

‘Innocent children and their medical carers are being injured and killed by these attacks. Hospitals, and particularly children’s hospitals, must be protected in times of conflict. All parties involved must be forced by world opinion to end this outrage and those responsible should face the full consequences of their actions in a court of law. We owe it to our children.’
